Lloyd Matthew French Jr., 84 a long time resident of Columbia, KY departed this life September 13, 2013 at The Palace Nursing Home in Red Boiling Springs, Tennessee. He was born August 7, 1929 in Concord, CA to the late Lloyd M. and Ada D Ough French Jr. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 42 years Patricia J. (Riedel) French on April 2, 1994. He later married Ivy (Redford) French who preceded him in death on January 31, 2006
He served in the US Air Force during the Korean War, worked in the banking industry with Wells Fargo in California for 25 years, later switching careers to develop and build recycling centers in Missouri, Florida and Texas before retiring to Kentucky.
During his retirement years he was very active in the Columbia community volunteering his efforts in many, many ways. He was involved in the DARE Program, Relay for Life, Adair County Food Pantry, Chamber of Commerce, Project Graduation, Man to Man a support group for victims of prostate cancer, Parent to Parent, Adult Learning Center, a member and Past President of the Champions for a Drug Free Kentucky and the interagency Spouse Abuse Coalition and the Advisory Board for Women's Recovery 21st Century Program. Mr. French was very instrumental in the establishment of the Drug Court Program, the Safe Spot for Children and the Reality Store for Students.
He was active in his service to the Columbia Christian Church of which he was a member and Past President of the Laborers Sunday School Class.
He is survived by one son: Gary R. French of Breeding, KY
Two daughters: Elizabeth J. French and husband Harry Martin of Angola, IN
Jennifer Parker and husband Barry of Breeding, KY
One sister: Edith French Ellison of Sparks, Nevada
7 Grandchildren, 11 Great Grandchildren one special cousin Barbara Gage
Two special friends: W. Guy Staley and Hazel Ellis both of Columbia
Extended family includes: Sallie Conover, Sue Mullins and John Collins
Survived by several nieces, nephews and family
Preceded in death by parents, wives and two brothers: William & Charles
Three sisters: Lillian, Florence and Harriet
A memorial service will be held Friday, October 4, 2013 at 6:30 pm at Stotts-Phelps-McQueary Funeral Home in Columbia, KY
Visitation will begin after 5:30 PM Friday Oct. 4, 2013
Clergy officiating: Bro. Terry White
At the request of Mr. French he has chosen cremation.
