Obituary

Leona Marie Akin, aged 73, of Columbia, Kentucky, passed away peacefully on Thursday, June 11, 2026, at her residence surrounded by her loving family. Born on July 4, 1952, in Breeding, Kentucky, Leona dedicated her life to her family, community, and passions.

Leona was a faithful attendee of 3trees Church and held a valued membership in the Adair County Cattlemen's Association, reflecting her deep connection to both her faith and her rural roots. She was known for her love of reading, farming, and attending festivals.

She is survived by her devoted husband, Phillip Michael Akin of Columbia, Kentucky, who stood by her side throughout their life together. Also mourning her loss are her cherished goddaughter Jan Burris (Tim) of Columbia, KY as well as her siblings: Charlotte Faye York (Bobby) of Russell Springs, KY Tammy Helm (Darrell), Rhonda Burton, Pat Furkins, and Dale Furkins, all of Columbia, KY. Leona also leaves behind special friends who held a treasured place in her heart, including Marlene Cowan, Ramona Dial, and Barbra Burton.

Leona was preceded in death by her beloved parents, Lawrence Laymar Murphy and Artie Marie (Pelston) Furkins, her siblings Della Mae Mandosi, Michael Furkins, Carletta George and Mary Ann Murphy, as well as her goddaughter Angela Cowan Smith, whose memories she held dear.

Funeral services will be 1:00pm Monday, June 15, 2026 at Stotts-Phelps-McQueary Funeral Home with burial in the Haven Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be on Sunday from 4:00-8:00pm and will continue Monday morning until time for the service at Stotts-Phelps-McQueary Funeral Home.
