Kenneth Lee "Moose" Cowan, aged 77, of Columbia, Kentucky, passed away peacefully on April 10, 2026, at Shanti Niketan Hospice in Glasgow, KY surrounded by his family and friends. Born on March 26, 1949, in Adair County, Kentucky, Kenneth lived a life marked by dedication to his family, a strong connection to his community, and a deep appreciation for the outdoors.
Kenneth attended the Freedom Separate Baptist Church, where his faith played a central role in his life. Those who knew him remember a man who enjoyed farming, working in his garage, and spending time outdoors. Above all, he treasured moments shared with his family and special friends.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Marlene Hay Cowan of Columbia, KY, who stood by his side through life’s many seasons. Kenneth’s family circle also includes his son-in-law, Shawn Smith of Jamestown, KY, and several nieces and nephews, all of whom held a special place in his heart. He was fortunate to receive compassionate care from his caregiver, Danny Kearney. Among his cherished friendships were those with Phil and Leona Akin and Debbie Curry, who provided warmth and companionship.
Kenneth was preceded in death by his parents, Clem and Ethel Burton Cowan; his daughter, Angela Rene Cowan Smith; and his siblings Gilbert, William, Danny, Elvin, Benny, and James Cowan, as well as his sisters Kathleen Wilson, Frances Corbin, Bertha Bohannon, Irene Cowan, Margie Richard, and Pearslee Reece. Their memories remain a lasting legacy in the lives he touched.
Funeral services will be 2:00pm Wednesday, April 15, 2026 at Stotts-Phelps-McQueary Funeral Home with burial in the Freedom Cemetery. Visitation will be on Wednesday after 10:00am at Stotts-Phelps-McQueary Funeral Home.
Kenneth Lee Cowan’s life was one of quiet strength and gentle kindness, reflected in his love for those close to him and his dedication to the simple joys of life. He will be profoundly missed by all who knew him and fondly remembered for his character, his passions, and the profound impact he made on his family and community.
