Joe Kerns's Obituary

Joe Kerns, aged 75, of Russell Springs, Kentucky, passed away at his residence on April 4, 2026. Born on July 25, 1950, in Adair County, Kentucky, Joe lived a life marked by dedication, craftsmanship, and an enduring love for his family and community.

A skilled carpenter by trade, Joe's hands not only built structures but also helped shape the lives of those around him. Beyond his professional pursuits, Joe was a proud member of Masonic Lodge #941, reflecting his commitment to fellowship and service.

Joe's life was distinguished by his honorable military service during the Vietnam War, where he served with valor in the United States Marines, United States Army, and United States Navy. His dedication to his country was a testament to his character — courageous, steadfast, and resolute.

He was a member of the Main St. Church of God in Russell Springs, KY. He cherished the simple pleasures of fishing, tinkering in his garage, and, most importantly, spending quality time with his family and friends. These passions enriched his life and left fond memories etched in the hearts of those who knew him.

Joe is survived by his beloved fiancée, Sandy Firkins; his devoted sons, Joe Kelly Kerns and his wife Melissa of Richmond, Kentucky, and Matthew Kerns and his wife Keri of Russell Springs. Kentucky. He took great pride in his grandchildren, Caleigh Scruggs and her husband Rafe, Hunter Kerns, Sydney Kerns, Ava Kerns, and Sawyer Kerns, as well as his cherished great-grandson, Colter Scruggs. Joe also leaves behind his siblings Shirley Wilson and Paul Kerns and his wife Holly, both of Russell Springs.

He was preceded in death by his parents Forrest Craven and Lois Hill Kerns; his beloved wife, Carrie Smith Kerns; his son Nicholas Kerns; a great granddaughter Karrie Scruggs and his siblings Barney, Albert, Dwight, Ricky Kerns, and Jeanette Doss.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00pm Thursday, April 9, 2026 at Stotts-Phelps-McQueary Funeral Home with burial in the Kerns Cemetery. Military honors will be provided by VFW Post 6097. Visitation will be on Wednesday from 4:00-8:00pm and will continue Thursday until time for the service at Stotts-Phelps-McQueary Funeral Home.

Pastor Christopher Shawn Fields will be officiating and pallbearers will be Keith Kerns, Kennedy McFarland, Clint Smith, Gary Smith, Kyle McFarland and Rafe Scruggs. Honorary pallbearers will be Sawyer Kerns, Hunter Kerns and Steve Kerns.

Joe Kerns’ legacy of commitment, love, and service will be deeply missed but forever cherished by his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him.
