James Robert “J.R.” Coffey, 74, of Columbia, Kentucky, passed away on September 16, 2026, at the University of Kentucky Hospital in Lexington, Kentucky. He was born on January 25, 1952, in Knifley, Kentucky to the late Robert and Agnes Louise Taylor Coffey. He was also preceded in death by a sister Alice Irvin.
J.R. was known for his work as an auto body man and as a former employee of Fruit of the Loom in Campbellsville, where friends knew him by the nickname “Catfish.” He built a life marked by hard work, familiar friendships, and the kind of easygoing presence that left an impression on those around him.
He found joy in the things he loved most, including riding motorcycles, old cars, and spending time with family and friends. He was also an avid University of Kentucky Basketball fan, and that enthusiasm was part of the spirit he carried through life.
Survivors include his partner Joyce Richards; two children Jennifer Coffey Smith (Sam) of Richmond, KY and Chris Coffey (Joscelyn) of Columbia, KY; two grandchildren Shawn Smith (Lauren) and Cheyayne Thrasher (Jason); two step grandchildren Libbie and Josiah Smith; four great grandchildren Theo Smith, Shepherd Smith, Jace Rooks, Cash Thrasher and one on the way; two sisters Judy Stephens (Kyle) and Linda Smith (Ricky); a brother-in-law Wayne Irvin and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00pm central time on Monday, September 21, 2026, at Stotts-Phelps-McQueary Funeral Home with burial in the Bearwallow Cemetery. Visitation will be on Monday after 10:00am Central time at Stotts-Phelps-McQueary Funeral Home.
Bro. Ralph Foster will be officiating and pallbearers will be Shawn Smith, Jason Thrasher, Sam Smith, Mike Dudgeon, Jonn Stephens and Ricky Smith.
J.R. will be remembered with love by those who knew him and by all who shared in his friendship, conversation, and company. His memory will live on in the hearts of those whose lives were touched by his kindness, his interests, and the time they were blessed to spend with him.
