Obituary

Gary Allen McKinney, 86, of Columbia, KY, passed away on Thursday, August 20, 2026, at T. J. Health Columbia. Born on January 23, 1940, in Vester, KY, Gary’s life was marked by dedication to his work, creativity in his pursuits, and deep commitment to his family, friends, and community.

Gary led a dynamic career as both a teacher and a barber, professions that allowed him to connect with a wide variety of people in his community. Whether shaping young minds in the classroom or welcoming patrons in his barber’s chair, Gary brought patience, warmth, and a genuine interest in others to all he did.

A true craftsman at heart, Gary found great joy in remodeling homes for resell and woodworking. These hobbies reflected his resourcefulness and keen eye for detail, while also offering him opportunities to build, create, and improve the spaces around him. His handiwork stands as a testament to his industrious nature and creative spirit.

One of the achievements Gary was most proud of was being the last surviving charter member of Trinity Church. His enduring presence and involvement in the church community spanned decades, making him a cornerstone of faith and fellowship for many.

Gary’s legacy lives on through his loving family. He is survived by his brother, Steve McKinney (Nancy) of Columbia, KY; nieces and nephews, David McKinney (Sheila), Tammy McKinney (Mike Nilles), Barry McKinney, Doug McKinney (Susie) and Ann Keltner (Brad). Their lives have been touched by his wisdom, kindness, and unwavering support.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Austin and Cecil Lou McKinney, as well as siblings Bobby McKinney, Louise McKinney, Vernon Lee "Pete" McKinney, and Allene Holmes. The memories they shared and the bonds they forged will remain cherished by all who knew them.

Funeral services will be 1:00pm on Sunday, August 23, 2026, at Stotts-Phelps-McQueary Funeral Home with burial in the Haven Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be on Sunday after 10:00am at Stotts-Phelps-McQueary Funeral Home.

Bro. Wes Irvin will be officiating, and pallbearers will be Kevin Greer, Doug McKinney, Brandon McKinney, Mike Nilles, Brad Keltner and Kadin Paiz.
