Gaither W. Hancock of the Cane Valley community, Columbia, KY passed away Tuesday, August 28, 2012. He was born September 27, 1921 in Adair County, KY.
Funeral services will be held at 11a.m. Friday, August 31, 2012 at Cane Valley Christian Church, Columbia, KY.
Clergy officiating Bro. Ivan Tucker & Bro. Paul Patton
Interment will follow at Cane Valley Cemetery with full Military Honors by the local VFW Post 6097
Family will receive friends at the Stotts-Phelps-McQueary Funeral Home of Columbia after 4 p.m. Thursday, August 30, 2012 and Friday morning at the church after 9:30 a.m.
He was the son of the late William Nathan and Nina Pearl (Smith) Hancock. He was preceded in death by 3 brothers and 1 sister: James E. Hancock, Henry W. Hancock, Marion Hancock and Mary E. Gist. He was also preceded by an infant son, Warren G. Hancock.
He married Myrtle Watson on March 19, 1955. She preceded him in death September 17, 1974.
He was also preceded in death by a special friend, Virgie Gabbert.
He was a U.S. Air Force veteran, serving for 2 years in World War II. After returning home, he continued his service, retiring from the Kentucky National Guard after 20 years. He was a member of the ASC committee of the Adair County Farm Service Agency for a total of 22 years, retiring in 2004.
Mr. Hancock was a lifelong farmer and a member of the Cane Valley Christian Church, a 60-year member of Columbia F&A Masons Lodge 96, a founding member of Columbia VFW Post 6097 and past member of Kentucky Cattlemen's Association.
He is survived by the following:
* Son Keith A. (Barbara Bryant-) Hancock of Columbia
* Daughters Jeanice R (Gene, dec'd) Murrell of Columbia and Brenda F. (David) Brumley of Jamestown, KY
*Grandchildren Mike, Chris and Brian Brumley and 5 great-grandchildren
